High School Search & Application FAQ

Does IVA have a high school option?

Intellectual Virtues Academy High School

As you know, IVA is recognized for its research-based, intellectually challenging and supportive academic program. In the fall of 2016, the Academy began extending the intellectual virtues education model to the high school, equipping every student to think well: critically, creatively, and with a capacity for self-growth.

The Academy invites you to learn more and experience the high school firsthand at one of the upcoming open house events or school tours. The first is on Tuesday, October 25 at 6 p.m. You can find valuable open house and school tour information on the newly launched Academy website, www.academylongbeach.org. If you are interested in completing an application for the 2017-2018 school year, you may complete an online application here or you may request a paper copy of the application by calling Academy front office at (562) 283-4456.

Academy students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and “habits of mind” needed for success in college, careers, and beyond! The Academy Team looks forward to getting to know your family as your child transitions into high school.

Can my child attend a high school in another district?

How does LBUSD’s HS Choice process work?

All incoming 9th grade students residing within the Long Beach Unified School District may apply to any LBUSD high school through the districts School Choice process.

Each family will register their student with ParentVue. An access code, which parents will need in order to register their student, will be provided to IVA during the fall of the application year.

Parents and their student will complete the high school application online through ParentVue. The application will require students to rank their top choices for high schools and programs or small learning communities. Students are not required to enroll in a special program or small learning community. They may register for a spot at their school of residence or at one of the other high schools.

The discovery and application process start in the fall of the school year preceding the student's first year of high school. A timeline for the 2016-17 application process can be found here. Students and parents have the opportunity to meet with high school representatives at a number of High School Summits and Site Nights organized by LBUSD during the application period. Times and dates of these events are posted in the fall of the year in which the students will be applying for high school.

Some programs require a separate application, including an essay.

More information can be found on the LBUSD website.
